Another one of those fun little games I bought on sale.
Months ago I saw some game play and looked interesting and pick it on sale. Money well spent. Gorgeous game, with a slightly tricky control scheme with a great story you interpret in your own way.
The story goes,...two brothers, having lost their mother in a drowning with one brother witnessing the ordeal and being too small to really help, feels somewhat responsible for her demise. Well, now father is sick and the only way to save him is to travel to a far off land for a cure. The brothers travel meeting fantastical creatures and interesting people along the way. The characters don't speak English, it's nearer to a Sims speak, "aablah abllaah spaerk." If you played Sims, you get me. You get the gist of the story completely from the interaction within the world. The medicine man points at a map and shows where you must travel, the sad troll/ogre has something for you to do, you don't understand it until you do it. OOHhhhh! The story is very emotional in my opinion because it let's you interpret it the way you see it. Brothers is a great journey of happiness and sadness.
The trickiest part of the game is the controls. There are two brothers and you control both of them simultaneously; left stick/left trigger, older brother, right stick/right trigger, younger brother. This made my brain hurt for a little while until you figure out a strategy to overcome the confusion. The game is a puzzle/platformer, so understanding the relationship of each brother to stick/button is key. Many times I let go of a button only to realize it was the wrong one, sh*t. The double stick/button combo works and hinders your game play experience but is a adaptable game experience that really becomes part of the story by the end. Very cool. The puzzles aren't especially difficult, the difficulty comes from using both brothers and both sides of your brain. Ouch!
The world is beautiful, filled with fantasy and wonder; trolls, human folk and giants. They directly affect the story and in big ways that make the experience so much more engrossing. The game goes from PG to PG-13/R pretty violently and it surprised me, but it was so worth it. It's a family fun game,...wait, what the hell!?
If this pops up again for sale, I would suggest getting it for the challenge and the beauty that this game entails. Tricky controls, engrossing story and a fantastic journey, Brothers is great. GOOD INU. I am going back to get those last cheevos, which were different than other games, in the way they were part of the environment. For example interacting at an angel statue in a graveyard, where the boys would solemnly stand then a falling would light the sky and the boys would react; or helping particular people or creatures. Just neat little touches to an already original experience.
SWS out.
