Finally the last DLC is done for Fallout: New Vegas; Lonesome Road. This was an end to a grandiose story arch for the entire game.
For some reason, this was my favorite of the DLCs, for it was a solemn experience. You weren't just another individual among others, you were alone; guess it's a catchy title after all for the DLC.
This is going to be a little spoiler-rific to tell the plot lines for the DLC. Just a warning.
The Courier, you, has taken a long journey, even before the plot lines for the game. You were supposedly from the west, which is New California Republic and had ties to a location called the Divide. This was your home and you keep this world alive with trade and your presence as a Courier. Then one day the NCR has you take a package east through the Divide marked with the old world symbols of the past. Unbeknown to you...you blew the place up.
The Divide was a thriving community built in the remnants of nuclear ICBM military area. The package you were carrying turned them on and destroyed the Divide. You didn't know. One man named Ulysses was a Courier and also an agent for the Caesar's Legion, (the bad people who destroy and assimilate people/tribes into their army), he was a follower of yours in a way. He worked in your shadow and saw your influence on the people of the Divide and how you also destroyed this world you helped to build. Well, Ulysses has a grudge against you for destroying what he had thought was your home...and was becoming his. Ulysses believed this was an enduring community built the vision of the "old world." So, he is pissed at you, you don't know why, he invites you into the Divide to see the destruction you have wrought and try to figure out why you did it. In my opinion, this was kind of a tired melodrama.
You do find ED-E, the floating Enclave Eyebot just trying to find his way home. He is your constant companion and only friend in the Divide. This is a mass produced copy of the one you find in the Mojave, with all his memories and files still intact.
The Divide was built on silos and what looked like a full fledged city. The atmosphere is desperate. Unlike the rest of the Mojave in the game, this destruction is recent without the feeling that the new population has come in to rebuild or reclaim the terrain. Though at the time of the Divides destruction the Legion and the NCR were vying for possession of this area. The remaining, were victims of the radiation of the nuclear warheads and since turned into ghouls. Angry ghouls, that once were enemies, now fellow combatants. Living among them are the past inhabitants that have been turned into lizard creatures called Tunnelers and every body's favorite species, the Deathclaw. Obsidian tried something new this round of DLC, scripted events, and that led to some serious tense moments that were fun. My favorite was a on a journey down a long elevated highway and fun with deathclaw friends.
You are dragged though the Divide going though missile silos, setting off nukes..."accidentally" and fighting though the deathclaw hordes. One deathclaw is rough, two is f*cking tough, but three is re-god-damn-diculous and that's what you are up against if you don't take your time and figure out that this game has "scripted events" and they hurt you, a lot. Luckily for me my perception skill is high enough to see around some of these events, even when you can't see them. They don't "pop in" until you pass that invisible line and then bum rush you. "I know you are hiding behind that f*cking busted ass fire engine truck!" Yep. There you are and here's a explosive .50 cal to the head. Thank the makers for explosive .50 cal ammo. Would not have finished this DLC without this firepower. It makes piles of bodies a possibility. Die Deathclaws! Die! Muhahahha!
I wasn't a fan of the story, Ulysses just hadn't come to grips that accidents happen with good intentions. The location was great with the desolation of the Divide. Many times you were alone, walking with ED-E. It's quiet..., too quiet..., SHIT! Deathclaw! The locations lay fresh to the devastation of the bombs that went off in the near past. It was just more closer to the post-apocalyptic feeling I like. You alone, walk alone, among the living, here and now. GOOD INU!
In one of your "accidental launches" you unlock a new area to explore filled to the brim with overpowered deathclaws with irradiated NCR and Legion. This area is a serious radiation risk as a nuke did just go off. They want to kill you, the environment wants to kill you, it is the gauntlet of Fallout: New Vegas to the extreme. I went the route of a scared rat, climbing to the top of broken structures all the while shooting blindly to whatever it was trying to kill me. Took three times to finally complete this area. Too chicken to go back and really explore again.
SWS out.
