Game(s) of the Year

Well ladies and gentleman we had quite the year for video games didnt we?  Im not sure we will ever see a year quite like this again and I know that it might be a minute or two before I can spend as much money on those green dvd cases again.  I have listed a few of the top tier titles after the break.

L.A. Noir
Battlefield 3
Rage
Modern Warfare 3
Uncharted 3
Killzone 3
Skyrim
Saints Row 3
Dragon Age 2
Dead Space 2
Gears of War 3
Assassins Creed Revelations
Portal 2
Batman: Arkham City
The Witcher 2
Dark Souls
Crysis 2
Bastion

Im sure I missed a few, but we probably won’t see a list of game like that come out in one year anytime soon.  Looking ahead to next year we have a new call of duty of course, mass effect 3, Diablo 3, borderlands 2, bioshock and gta v, but im not sure all of those will make it to store shelves next year.

So picking a game of the year should have been quite difficult, but it really only ended up coming down to 2 games.  The surprisingly good Modern Warfare 3, and Skyrim.  I know that most of us here have no interest in a game like Skyrim and MW is the only game that we would even consider playing.  So I’m going to compare both of these games for a minute before this year’s SWS Game of the Year is crowned.

Modern Warfare 3 is the best first person shooter I have played since Modern Warfare.  The game is much cleaner and more balanced than its predecessor and while it is a bit bogged down in options for my taste it is an amazing game.  I really enjoyed the simple nature of the first game, but I understand why they didn’t bring it back.  Seriously though do we need 15 camo options, 30+ killstreak options, 5+ gun perks, 10+ attachments for all the different guns in the game?  Probably not.  I admit they are cool but usually by adding that much shit it eventually unbalanced the guns.  For example, in mw2 a silencer made everything else more powerful.  I digress; the story was amazing and tied everything together beautifully.  The maps are solid although it seems to be lacking that big open map like Overgrown or that golf course map from Black Ops. I was one of the people that were down on this game before it even came out, but I think it’s better than anyone expected it to be.

On to Skyrim, which I could spend months talking about, but don’t worry Rage I won’t, in fact ill make this brief.  Skyrim is amazing on every level and deserves every award that it has received.  It is the prettiest, deepest, and most amazing game that I have played in a long time.  For the first time ever and Elder Scrolls game actually has me interested in playing the main story.  There are so many little missions that are memorable and amazing, such as the random quest where you drink a beer or two and then wake up the next morning trying to figure out all that you did the night before(including stealing a goat and selling it to a troll).  Truth be told I'm almost afraid of the damn game its so daunting.  Ill spend an hour playing just to realize all i really did was walk across the wilderness, kill some bandits and reorganize my inventory.   I’ll let Regen wax poetic in his review as he is further along than I am and lives vicariously through his character.

Skyrim is the game of the year, it always was going to be but, Call of Duty made it really really close for me somehow.  The story was the best in years and the multiplayer seems to be almost… fair.  Crazy right?  Anyway fellas this concludes my first post from the big city.  Peace out!

  1. I agree 150%: Skyrim deserves game of the year. I'm not going to beat a dead horse by lavishing more praise on it, so ditto what Ranvier said.

  2. Best RPG is Skyrim, just because I am a kickass Nord stealth archer assassin is cooler than you,...don't hate.

Best Puzzler is Portal 2, and am still looking for someone to run through Co-op again and Peer Review DLC.

Best Shooter is MW3, Battlefield 3 was kinda a turd cause I can't play it like you should, but the premise is closer to war...like it should be.

Rage was awesome, story sucked. Bastion in the back log. Dead Space 2, backlog. Want to play Crysis 2, find out what all the hub-bub is about for Batman, Saints Row when it's ten bucks and slog through A-Creed when I get a chance.

So many damn fine games last year...Gotta start saving pennies for this year.
