Who's your favorite race of mer or men from Elder Scrolls?

I have been trudging through the land of Skyrim, curb stomping Alduin, splattering Lord Harkon and preparing for my journey to Solstheim to put my dragonbone mace upside Miraak's head. I have also been really nerding out on the lore of the Elder Scrolls series and found some interesting history. Especially the races of Tamriel, past and present. I will not lie, I am a nerd. Little list of races...

Nords-the men of Skyrim, crossed over from the land of Atmora invading the northern reaches of Tamriel and nearly killing off an entire race of Snow elves.

Snow elves- Thought to be extinct, if you have played Dawnguard you know better, live on through the twisted race of Falmer who were betrayed by the Dwemer.

Dwemer- deep elves, dwarves called by some (thought to have been called that by the giants that inhabited northern Tamriel at the time of they migration) lived underground in great steam fortresses, were atheists, telepathically linked to each other even over great distances, suddenly disappeared (*poof*), were in constant contention were the Chimer

Chimer/Dunmer- race of elves that settled the lands of Morrowind after the Dwemer, looked alot like their Aldmer cousins, lived by the slave trade, Tribunal pissed off the deadric god, Azura, turned them to ash folk, the dark elves or Dunmer, pray to the deadra

Argonians- reptilian race from Black Marsh of SE Tamriel, link to the Hist tree, they drop sap from the tree like LSD, slaves of the Dunmer for many ages, live in a swamp of poisonous danger, little is known of their homeland

Kajiit- cat people, literally, more than one form that we all know, depending on the moons determines the form, from the simple house cat size, the cat folk, to cats as big as horses, natural thieves and traders, live in Elsweyr another unknown providence to gamers

Bosmer- wood elves of Valenwood, first elves on Tamriel main land, straight hunters, made a pact with the spirit of the woods, you eat what you kill...no matter what, never harm any plant life period, strictly carnivores, been many a jumping off point for numerous rebellions, dense forested region and nearest to the Summerset Isles home of the Aldmer

Altmer- old elves, tallest race on Tamriel, brilliant magic users, brought the predominate religion to Tamriel, moved to the Summerset isles after migrating from Aldmer, high society, high art, believe they are the master race, warred with the Sload, the source of the Aldmeri Dominion...three times!

Redguard- sinking island of Yokuda caused them to flee to Hammerfell, brilliant naval supremacy, two castes, lords and warriors that will often fight amongst themselves, strong independence, has held back many rebellions and uprisings

Bretons- live in High Rock far NW of Tamriel, caste system of merchants, Bretons are the result of mer and men breeding, long been a land of sanctuary for men and mer. Many elves that were hunted down fled here, carry the traits of the elves with magical arts

Imperial- regular joes from the central providence, once slaves to the race of elves known as Ayleids, slave rebellion rose to break the chains, capital of the Tamriel and proud of that heritage, make up the majority of the Imperial army that police the entire continent

Ayleids- once rulers of Cyrodiil providence, built the white gold tower, made men their slaves, believed and captured the power of the stars, after the slave rebellion they were almost hunted into extinction, pockets of their race may still exist in hiding, most fled to Valenwood and assimilated into the population

Orsimer- orcs, once elves, much like the Chimer/Dunmer were changed by godly deeds, tribal, warriors, been the ire of many racial genocide attempts, live in confined tribal communities

There are many other races, these I feel have a dominant force in the formation of the land of Tamriel. Hell three of them are extinct, sort of.

My favorite has to be the Dwemer. They were dicks, atheist, and brilliant minds before any race of men or mer could even comprehend what or is what they built in Tamriel. Subjugated the Snow elves to become blind to protect there own interests. If the Snow elves hadn't fallen into this trap there still might be that race today.

They respected no gods, but the science and the minds that created their wondrous works. Theirs was a race chasing the gods, to become gods themselves that led to their undoing. Only one still exists, he may or not be dead by the time of Skyrim, infected with corpus and living in the basement of a Dunmer wizard on the island of Vardenfall, pretty good chance, he dead. They reached too far. Theorists believe on Tamriel, that they were either stricken to death at once, or that they simply slipped this plane of existence and are trapped in a plane of Oblivion.

I love delving into the old Dwemer fortresses, the industrial clank of machinery still running ages after their disappearance, the life that still dwells within. There was real power in that race, and tended to themselves and destroyed anyone who endangered their way of life. The empire of Tamriel would have not have been what it was without their giant-ass world wrecker the Numidium. This machine forged an empire, but also led to the demise of the Dwemer.

I kinda hope the *poof* back into existence, would be interesting to see what had happened, and how the developers would shape their characters.

What's your favorite?

For Elder scrolls lore I usually go here:

For some laughs the Senile Scribbles Series (hilarious journey of the dragonborn):

Their Game of Thrones parody is fun too.

SWS out.

  2. My first foray into the Elder Scrolls series was Morrowind, which of course takes place in the homeland of the Dunmer. Since you learn so much about their culture and history there (and because they have black skin and red eyes SO BADASS) I've always taken the greatest interest in them. The way that some Dark Elves cling to their nomadic, tribal culture while others practice sorcery (Telvanni) or assimilate into modern Imperial culture (via government and settling in metropolitan places like Vivec and the Imperial City is a strikingly accurate mirror of the struggle of many cultures in our own world.

Although all the races get some level of attention in the games, I think the race that would be the most exciting to explore further (perhaps in the next ES game, set in Elsweyr) is the Khajiit.

  3. My thoughts are we are going to Hammerfell as they were mentioned in main story. There was also the side quest with weapons and garb shown. Its a desert with green space around the edges...kinda drab. Lots of history there though, also last bastion of the rouken clan of dwemer and some of the oldest buildings of Tamirel. Either there...or High Rock. Gut feeling is that they want to keep the southern half of the continent shrouded in mystery til graphics can handle all that jungle!
