Starts out as a group of trust fund kids having a good time...
This game is Skyrim with guns, as many critics and reviewers have stated in previous reviews. It is, sort of. It is an open world, total freedom to go cause trouble and not follow the story until you have too.
You are Jason Brody, middle child with your brothers and their friends doing a Indonesia tour of partying before heading back home to California. His group is the stereotypical trust fund kids spending Daddy's money and not caring about anything. Until you land on the Rook Islands after parachuting and going all extreme. HA. Taken captive by the locals you find yourself and your friends scattered into ransom or worse. You meet Vaas your captor. He cra-cra. Your brother, Grant, ex military gets you free and then he is killed. Sh*t. Vaas let's you run for sport, you get away and meet with the island inhabitants fighting back against Vaas and his pirates. You make it your mission to find your friends and get off the island.
You get free roam of the "northern island" and eventually the "southern island," the map is very large covered with the pirates who want to kill you. You slowly unlock the blinded map by climbing radio towers and clearing areas of the map. Jason can make the island "friendly" by taking over outposts. Little shanty forts filled with enemies, you can take out quietly with stealth and trickery or go in guns blazing and risk the alarms going off with reinforcements coming in. You get a hefty bonus for taking the outpost with stealth.
The RPG-ish element is the action tree you unlock containing different skills is stealth, health and combat. Unlocking skills that will make you a killing machine. The knife skills were my favorite. Stealth kills where the enemy is your prey and you do it in silence. Very Satisfying. Yet, kinda gruesome. You see up close and personal your carnage inflicted. The guns have customization, red dots, extended clips and optical sights. The islands are full of wildlife, just as dangerous as the pirates, tigers, leopards and komodo dragons. You need a new weapon sling? Go kill ya some dingos or bears. These animals are beasts, and they don't like you either. Yet, they can be your friends when you drag them into outposts and let them run a muck. This is also a riot to watch the pirates deal with these threats. Jungle fire. You light some weeds on fire and whoosh there goes the neighborhood, animals scatter, pirates scatter and you run like hell. Can be your "friend" in situations.
Relics and WWII era Japanese bunkers dot the islands along with their past inhabitants, telling the history of the island. Racing, knife throwing contests and gun challenges open up for pastimes. Or just go fu*ck around and shoot things. It is freedom. The most fun is circling the outposts seeing how you can take out the pirates in the most stealthy or the most inventive ways. This is best part of the game in my opinion. These test you ability to act on the situation, outposts range from wide open to nestled in a mountain alcove. Heavies and dogs become challenges to overcome.
The story is batshit insanity, I am not going to really say anything about it, other than what I have divulged already. Just crazy.
For anybody who likes FPS and freedom should love this game. The gunplay is tight, the stealth is flawless and the story is great. If you can find this for cheap, get it. It's worth 20$. This is a solid gold GOOD INU. Hey, if you get it, there is a supposedly great co-op mode, hit me up. Tons o' FUN.
SWS out.
