I just wanted to share this brilliantly bad movie to the rest of you, who will probably not watch this. Though I must share, that I thoroughly enjoy this bad movie.
Starring Will Ferrell as the son a rancher in Mexico and a cast of other recognizable though, names don't come to mind cast. This movie is entirely in Spanish and subtitled. I know a few people who can't stand subtitles, and that it detracts from the overall experience of the movie; that's not the case here, luckily. Ferrell plays the straight laced, ranchero, 'dumb son' and is the A-list comedy star in an other wise C+ movie. It's C+ on purpose which in my opinion makes it brilliant. The other 'good son' is a drugas dealer freshly back from the US with girlfriend in tow to take over the home front from the rival dealer in the area, Onza.
What makes this film brilliant is the use of simple and stupid, dialogue and film. The film plays much in akin to old westerns where the gauchos (cowboys) would walk on the sets supposedly in the wilderness. Fake trees and painted background abound. Completely noticeable and on purpose. The film runs much like a Mexican soap opera, where the emotional scenes are way over the top. Film editing problems, where somebody might fall off their horse or hang up a phone while the scene switches back to the person on the other end still talking then back again where they still talking on the phone. Extreme sight gags and uncomfortable scenes add some dramatic flair. Hell, even puppets.
This movie was bad on purpose. I loved it. It was jarring to watch at first and about to shut it down but, the film grows to an enjoyable experience I didn't see coming. Reminds a lot of Kung-Pow: Enter the Fist, another bad movie I love.
If ya get a chance to watch a bad movie, this is out now on Netflix.
SWS out.
